What do you mean outside of battle exactly? Doesn't seem like it'd have any use there

if it's outside battle, then you can check for the pokemon available in that route, and if all are caught you can go on to another route to farm for pokemon to catch. otherwise, you have to face each pokemon to look at it, and sometimes rare pokemon will cause trouble to script.
